5G
The fifth generation of mobile network technology, offering faster speeds, lower latency, and increased connectivity. -
Backhaul
The intermediate link between the core network and smaller subnetworks (e.g., connecting a cell tower to a central data center). -
Bandwidth
The maximum rate of data transfer across a network path. More bandwidth allows more data to flow simultaneously. -
Broadband
High-speed internet access that is always on and faster than dial-up connections. -
Carrier
A company that provides telecommunication services (e.g., AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile). -
Carrier Aggregation
A technique in LTE/5G that combines multiple frequency bands for increased data rates and capacity. -
Carrier Hotel
A data center where multiple telecom and internet service providers interconnect their networks. -
CDN (Content Delivery Network)
A geographically distributed network of servers that deliver content to users faster based on location. -
Cell Tower
A structure that supports antennas and equipment for transmitting wireless communication. -
Churn Rate
The rate at which customers discontinue their telecom service over a period of time. -
Colocation (Colo)
A facility where telecom companies rent space for servers and network gear in a shared data center. -
Core Network
The central part of a telecom network that routes data and connects various systems and services. -
DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service)
A cyberattack that floods a network or service with traffic to overwhelm and disrupt it. -
DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)
A technology for high-speed internet over traditional telephone lines. -
Fiber Optics
A technology that transmits data as light pulses through glass or plastic fibers, offering high speed over long distances. -
Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)
A broadband delivery method that uses wireless signals instead of physical cables to provide internet to a fixed location. -
Handoff (or Handover)
The process of transferring a mobile connection from one cell tower to another without dropping the call or session. -
Hotspot
A physical location or device that provides wireless internet access, often via Wi-Fi. -
IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem)
A framework for delivering IP-based multimedia services like voice and video. -
Internet Protocol (IP) Address
A unique identifier for a device on a network, used for communication and data routing. -
IP Telephony (VoIP)
Technology that enables voice communications over the internet instead of traditional phone lines. -
ITU (International Telecommunication Union)
A UN agency that sets international telecom standards and allocates spectrum. -
Latency
The time it takes for data to travel from sender to receiver. Critical for real-time applications. -
Latency Jitter
Variations in latency over time, which can affect the quality of voice and video communications. -
Mobile Network Operator (MNO)
A company that owns and operates wireless infrastructure and offers mobile services. -
Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO)
A provider that offers mobile services by leasing capacity from traditional MNOs. -
MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching)
A protocol that directs data across networks using path labels instead of long network addresses. -
Net Neutrality
The principle that internet service providers must treat all data equally and not prioritize or block specific content. -
New Radio (NR)
The 5G radio access technology standard, offering improved performance over LTE. -
OSS/BSS (Operations/Business Support Systems)
Software systems used by telecom companies to manage network operations (OSS) and customer services/billing (BSS). -
Over-the-Top (OTT)
Services delivered via the internet that bypass traditional telecom infrastructure (e.g., Netflix, WhatsApp). -
Packet Switching
Data transmission method that divides data into packets and sends them independently over a network. -
PBX (Private Branch Exchange)
A private telephone system within an organization that manages internal and external calls. -
Peering
The practice of two networks exchanging traffic directly to improve speed and reduce reliance on third parties. -
Porting
The process of transferring a phone number from one telecom provider to another. -
Provisioning
The setup and configuration of network services for a user or customer. -
Radio Access Network (RAN)
The part of a telecom network that connects user devices to the core network using radio signals. -
Roaming
The ability of a mobile device to connect to a network other than its home provider, typically in a different geographic area. -
SIP (Session Initiation Protocol)
A protocol for initiating, maintaining, and terminating real-time communication sessions. -
SIM Card
A removable chip in mobile devices that stores subscriber information and allows access to a mobile network. -
Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR)
A measure of signal strength compared to background noise; a higher ratio means a better-quality signal. -
Smart Antenna
An advanced antenna system that adjusts its transmission based on the location of the receiving device. -
Software-Defined WAN (SD-WAN)
A software-based approach to managing and optimizing wide area networks, improving flexibility and cost control. -
Spectrum
The range of electromagnetic frequencies used to transmit data wirelessly, including radio, TV, and cellular signals. -
TDM (Time Division Multiplexing)
A technique for sending multiple signals over the same channel by assigning each signal a different time slot. -
Telephony
The technology of voice communication over distances, covering both analog and digital systems. -
Trunking
The sharing of network resources across multiple users to improve efficiency in communication systems. -
UCaaS (Unified Communications as a Service)
A cloud-based platform that provides integrated communication tools like voice, video, and messaging. -
Virtual Private Network (VPN)
A secure tunnel through the internet that allows users to access private networks remotely. -
Wi-Fi
Wireless networking technology that enables internet access through radio waves in homes, businesses, and public spaces.
